MOUNT VERNON — Community members, donors, volunteers and employees gathered Sunday to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the education nonprofit Children of the Valley.

The event was held at Bethany Covenant Church in Mount Vernon — the original site of the organization’s free afterschool program, which started with 30 students.

Now about 200 students between kindergarten and eighth grade attend afterschool programs each week in Sedro-Woolley, Burlington and Mount Vernon.
